Are you writing fantastic articles but no one is reading them? The trouble may well be with your titles. Learn three things top copy writers do to write titles that grab a reader's attention.
You may well be the foremost writer of the new age and also the most prolific. Unfortunately, that won't get you far if no one is reading your work. In order to improve your readership, you must seize the reader by the lapels and get your content in his face. How do you do that? For the answer, let's take a look at the magazine stand at the grocery store. Several of the best, best copy writers in the country write nothing but article titles for the covers of periodicals. Let's see how they do it.
-
Expose secrets. Everyone wants to know a secret. You will excite the curiosity of your reader if you have information he cannot get anyplace else. This is more intense if some mysterious "they" is operating to keep your data out of the hands of your reader. Compare "Eating Too Much Sugar is Bad For You" and "What the Cereal Industry Insiders Really don't Want You to know About Sugar." Nobody wants to hear that eating sugar is unhealthy for you, but lots of folks want to know what the fat cats are hiding from them.
-
Use numbers. Men and women today do not have long attention spans. They'll take a minute to get a piece of information but they won't take twenty minutes to have much more data. Let them know you are not going to be taking a lot of their time by telling them exactly how many tips, secrets, strategies, etc. you are going provide them. Consider these titles: "Five Steps to $5000 a Month," "Seven Ways to Pleasure Your Boyfriend," "Three Suggestions To Stop Your Cat From Scratching the Furniture." Can you see how they cause a reader to search further into the article while promising not to take all day about it?
-
Be dramatic. Don't be afraid to scare folks. The promos for regional news shows do this all of the time and so do the magazines in the supermarket. Use this judiciously, it's possible to go crazy and a few of those local news promos do just that. But review these two ideas. First, "Winter's Coming - Never Forget Snow Tires," and second, "Don't Let Your Family Die in a Ditch - Do this Now!" Right after reading the first illustration he'll almost certainly say, "okay" and move on. But the second illustration? Yikes! I really don't want my family to die in a ditch, I want to find out more. You get the idea.
If your articles aren't receiving the views you would like, go to the grocery store and learn from the pros. Grab the reader with a thought provoking title and increase your readership.
