Since it was identified, nearly one hundred years ago, Dyslexia has been an enigma to educators around the world. This condition, that seriously compromises the reading comprehension and language skills of both children and adults, affects up to 15% of the population and yet its causes have remained mostly a mystery. A myriad of theories have been produced over that time period as the quality of our educational techniques and technologies have improved, but in practical application the treatment of dyslexic children has remained appallingly consistent. In the often under funded public school system these students are often relegated to special needs classes, where they remain stigmatized by that definition. This broad and inappropriate classification deprives these children of the opportunity to contribute to the general school population. Even after a proper diagnosis, many dyslexic children are still perceived as behavioral liabilities that can best be served by annexation, medication and rudimentary instruction. In addition to being conspicuously antiquated, these counterintuitive methods produce unmotivated students with low self-esteem. There are a number of reasons for this approach, not the least of which are overworked and underpaid public educators that resign themselves to the proposition that a manageable student (by whatever means necessary) qualifies as an acceptable outcome. This position is completely unacceptable given the many recent, scientific discoveries that reveal the abundant, untapped potential of most dyslexic children.

It has now been proven time and again that properly motivated, dyslexic children possess a wealth of intuitive gifts that oftentimes far exceed those of their peers. These gifts and abilities, inherent in Dyslexia, often allow them to be exceptional, abstract thinkers and problem solvers. The arts and sciences are perpetually populated with accomplished dyslexics, most notable among them are Leonardo da Vinci and Sir Richard Branson who, in addition to the creation of his internationally known brand, Virgin, has more recently been credited with the commercialization of space travel. The question remains, what is it that allows some of these children to manifest their particular genius while others fall through the cracks? There are a host of remarkable, and sometimes less-than-remarkable, programs in existence that incorporate everything from multi-sensory approaches to therapy, but close examination of all of these reveal that, regardless of the teaching technology used, the most potent and effective component in any program is the inspirational synergy of communication created by the union of educators and parents. The proper application of the data retrieved through this crucial relationship creates a circuit that immerses the student in an inspirational and motivational environment that allows the child to experience a full range of expression as they discover their inner genius. As most parents of dyslexic children will attest, this inspirational circuit must be maintained not only for its educational value, but for their, and their child's, own psychological survival. Recent advances in social media via the internet provide teachers, parents and students with powerful tools like the Pathways Network that help them to share ideas, information, challenges and accomplishments.
