People who have tried to overcome shyness and social anxiety often come out on the other side successful. It’s not always an easy journey, especially if you’re used to keeping to yourself; but the experience is definitely well worth anything.
Read on to find out how to overcome shyness and social anxiety.
Step 1: Express Yourself.
Let’s start with baby steps. While having dinner with a friend, say something about the dish you’ve ordered. Is it delicious? Does it need more salt? Is it better than the food they serve over at your favorite restaurant?
Even saying just one sentence is already a step forward. Do this for basically everything you do. When you take a bite of the chocolate cupcake at your local bakery, tell the baker that it’s delicious.
At this point, it’s important to note that you should only express good things about something when talking to the person who made it. In the case that the cupcake really isn’t good, save that opinion for when you’re alone with a friend.
Step 2: Do Something Different.
Doing something that’s not included in your usual routine can help you overcome shyness and social anxiety.
Why don’t you take up a short class during the weekend? A cooking class will do. Not only will this help you make more friends, this will also boost your confidence.
Knowing your way around the kitchen will certainly help you have a better image of yourself. This confidence will then carry on into your life.
Step 3: Surround Yourself With Friends And Family.
There is strength in numbers. One way to overcome shyness and social anxiety is to visit new places with your support system. When you’re with friends, you’ll have so much fun that some of your inhibition goes away.
Feeling free to be yourself will help you realize that you shouldn’t be too worried about what other people might think of you. Be comfortable in your own skin and don’t try too hard to please others. Get that down and you’ll emerge more confident than ever.
To overcome shyness and social anxiety is no small feat. Others luckily manage to do this early in their life. If you feel that it’s too late for you, I advise you to chuck those notions out the window.
There’s no such thing as too late when it comes to personal development. You can be retired and still make the most of your life!
