Many people ask, “Is it okay to visit the custom designed and built home I am having constructed?” This is a great question but the answer is Yes and No.
A new home being built is just like any other construction project, there are many dangers both seen and unseen that can injure the untrained eye. For this reason, it is best not to drop by and visit a home under construction.
Not only can you be injured yourself, but you could also cause a worker to be injured. Even though it might not look like it from afar, the construction job site is a finely tuned mechanism. Workers know who is doing what and what they need to be doing. If you show up at the home site, you can easily throw this operation out of sync even with the simple fact of having workers need to watch out for you.
You can also injure yourself at these home building sites. There are often open holes you could easily fall into or covers not designed for adult weights. There are also exposed wires, and sharp ends of metal and pipes. On top of all this, there are construction tools, saw and hammers that can easily cause serious injury.
Because of all this, it is best to not visit a home construction site without prior notice. However, you should regularly set up times to visit your new home while it is being built, this is especially important with custom built and designed homes.
By visiting your new home, you can make sure the designs are being translated in the house the way you have been planning. It is much easily to fix a wall or window that is not where you have thought early in the framing process rather than after the house is finished.
By regularly visiting your custom home while under construction to can help ensure you end up with the home you had planned.
Most construction work ends around 3:30 or 4:00 every day, so this is a great time to plan to meet with your builder. Because the workers are done for the day they will not be at risk or injury, plus these will have secured the sire and their tools for the night. Both of these will help insure your safety.
By scheduling visits at this time, you will still have plenty of light to see your house; there is nothing worse than inspecting a home when it is too dark to see all the details of the work in progress.
Two fine notes about visiting home construction sites. Many workers will work on the weekends to get work this done, so don’t expect the weekends to be free of works at your homes. Second, it is best to not show up after hours unannounced at your new home, in low light conditions it is very easy to be injured.
When you are having a custom home build for you, it is very important you visit the project site from time to time, but to protect yourself and the workers, it is best to schedule your visits ahead of time.
