In this simple guide below, I offer some great advice for how to grow orchids correctly. From watering your orchid, considerations when fertilizing and what to keep in mind when planting your orchid.

  1. For those starting out looking to select their first orchid plant, the Phalaenopsis orchid has become a favorite for newcomers, due to it's resilience making them easier to grow and care for. When well nurtured, you may find in season that you'll have between eight and twelve weeks of gorgeous blooms.

  2. When the time comes to plant your orchid, unlike other plants that require potting soil your orchid prefers bark. You could use your standard potting media, but you'll likely find the plant will suffer from low air circulation. This will become hazardous to the orchid affecting the drainage and cause root blockage. So, if you intend to keep your orchids in pots you need to supply ample drainage.

  3. Let's cover watering your orchid. You can expect to water your orchid plant once or twice a week, depending on the specie of orchid you have. In the warmer months you'll likely find the orchid requiring water more frequently. In lower temperatures such as the winter season, your orchid may only require watering once every two or three weeks. Some species go well without water for four and even 5 weeks in the cooler months.

  4. With regards to sunlight, like all plants they require sun but its important to note to much harsh sun can leave damaging effects. What you want to do is place them where the sun isn't too strong during the day, usually in an eastern facing direction is a good choice. Be mindful though, if you spot any discoloration in the leaves it means your orchid is receiving too much strong sunlight. This side effect shows as a tinged yellowish color on the leaves. This discoloration can also indicate undernourishment in your orchid.

  5. As with most plants, fertilizer plays a key to optimal health. It's best to go with a mild quality fertilizer to feed your orchid once every two or three weeks, depending on your specie of orchid and the season your currently in. Some fertilizers can be too strong and be harmful to the plant. When in doubt it's always best to ask your local supply store or garden shop for recommendations.
