Displaying Tobacco Products Will be Prohibited in Turkey

A ban on displaying tobacco products will soon come into effect in Turkey, according to country's healthcare minister.
These new measures come straight after a year when a ban on smoking in public places was implemented. Thus it means that all tobacco products will be kept out of sight at stores, bars, cafes and other establishments.
The given ban is a part of a new draft regulation of the Tobacco and Alcohol Market Regulatory Agency. It is not known exactly when the new measures will come into effect but once it happens, customers will have to ask shop assistant for cigarettes.
"We have problems with the incompetent work of municipalities that concerns implementing the smoking ban in enclosed public places. Currently we have started to work on changes to existing legislation", the minister stated.
Despite many problems this program provided with good results. Smoking ban was applied in the majority of cases and the number of young smokers had dropped greatly. Also was started "Alo 171", which helps those people who want to stop smoking.
"The Health Ministry plans to adopt new regulations concerning stop-smoking pills. We will buy particular pills and test them on 300,000 volunteers. Then we will analyze how effective these pills are and once they will be approved by the ministry, they'll be sold at pharmacies," the minister declared.
The law that was implemented on July 19, 2009, prohibited smoking in all enclosed public places as for example - restaurants, bars and other places where nargile is smoked, and also in taxis, trains and stadiums.
Businesses are additionally required to make arrangements that protect nonsmokers from fumes if smoking is allowed in open-air parts of their premises.
The ban, however, strikes off private residences.
Any area with a mobile ceiling or roof, which has doors, windows and walls is considered "enclosed areas" in accordance with the law.
Smoking is banned in all railway, highway, air-transportation vehicles, including taxis and an all places where sporting, educational or cultural activity occurs in the open air.
Areas that do not exceed 10% of the overall space, should be separated from other enclosed areas, and have been set aside for smokers in nursing homes and prisons.
In accordance with this law, hotels will have to provide all rooms with ventilation systems in order to meet the new established standards for those people who smoke. Moreover these rooms should be on the same floor.
People who do not observe the law will be fined with 69 Turkish Liras, while those business owners who will allow people smoke in enclosed areas we'll be fined between 560 and 5,600 liras.
