The medical profession has existed for as long as humanity has existed. Granted, people have always fallen sick and the need for curing the diseases has always been there. The demand for medical jobs is therefore not likely to go away soon. This is one of the reasons why medical school applications are very competitive. In fact, for very competitive schools, one needs to have a near perfect GPA in order to be accepted. Nursing is one of the many professions in the medical field. The profession is rewarding although it may sometimes demand that you put in extra amounts of work. To many people, pursuing a career in the medical is more of a calling.
There are many paths which one can follow in order to become a nurse. For instance, you can choose to obtain a nursing qualification. You can obtain a resident nursing degree which takes about three years to obtain. Alternatively; you can obtain the associate of Nursing Science degree which takes two or three years to complete. Getting a nursing diploma will allow you to get the entry level positions. Getting a bachelors degree will require some additional training.
The available study options
If you have already obtained the RN degree by studying online, it can be very easy for you to study for a bachelors degree. A bachelor’s degree can be earned in four years. With a bachelors degree, one is able to obtain lucrative jobs in the healthcare sector.
Advanced degrees.
A bachelor’s degree is usually enough for one to get a decent job in the healthcare industry. The Master of Science (MSN) degree can be obtained in just two years. It allows you to specialize in such specific fields as mental health, surgical nursing and advanced nursing practitioner. You can obtain the RN and the MSN degrees in just five years by pursuing both degrees concurrently. It will take you only five years to do so. You will need to be constantly trained as the medical technology keeps on changing by the day.
When you are selecting an online degree, it’s important that you select an accredited college that is recognized by employers. You obviously don’t want to spend your hard earned money on a college that has not been accredited. You should also take into consideration the cost of the program.
One of the things that you must check out for is the quality of the program. There are several ways in which you can use to ascertain the quality of the program. One of the ways in which you can check the quality is to look at the faculty reputation. Look for the number of publications of the faculty in reputable academic journals and other peer review journals. The awards of the faculty will also be a likely indication of the quality of the faculty. Another major indicator of the quality of the program is the success of past students in the program. Check for their employability. Their starting salaries should also be a major factor.
Higher starting salaries and employment rate usually does indicate how the employers regard the college and its graduates. The awards given to past students by employers should also weigh in. Another factor that can be used to gauge the quality of the college is its ranking. Compare the ranking of the college by the various ranking organizations so that you get a fair picture of the quality of the program. Usually a college may rank highly using one set of criterion while doing badly in an entirely different criterion.
Online degrees have been on the increase lately and many people are now choosing to pursue them. One of the reasons for this has been the rapid pace of globalization. With a computer and an internet connection, you can safely pursue your studies. In addition; many people prefer the flexibility that the online degrees offer. You get to study at your own pace and hence score optimally. This is unlike attending a college offline where you have to follow the timetable. This is however not to condone laziness as you will still be expected to get a set GPA for you to graduate.
