The applications of NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) are many and varied, and that flexibility is part of the appeal it has for a lot of people. Just a few areas, each with wide applications, are sports related improvement, business and careers; and even psychological issues such as deeply rooted phobias and other difficult emotions. NLP techniques have helped millions of people over the years with an incredible array of diversity of goals. We're going to discuss just a few of the tremendous number of positive gains that Neuro Linguistic Programming has to offer.
One of the basic ideas behind neuro linguistic programming is that we can never know the way things really are.
The things we believe in, or think, or even see is based on perception. It's relatively simple in that if you make a decision to change how you perceive a thing (in your world or mind), then other ways of thinking about it would change. We do have control in our lives to the extent that we can control how we view things. That idea is the cornerstone of Neuro Linguistic Programming, and so many of the practices incorporate that idea. Once you realize that you are in control of your reality, you can re-create it any way you want.
Much about Neuro Linguistic Programming concerns the way we look at events in our life, or things in our life, and so redefining that perspective is called, reframing, and it is extremely powerful. What happens is simply redefining, or changing, how something is viewed or thought about in our minds. The power of reframing lies in its ability to remove a belief that is false and negative, almost always, and replace it with truth and positive. This is also used in sales, politics and other areas where it's necessary to influence the way people think. For example, if one of the candidates running for office is quite a bit older than the other, both sides will try to frame this to their advantage. Younger ages in politics point to forward thinking and new ideas, and older politicians will say their ages give them wider knowledge and experience to handle tough issues.
Neuro Linguistic Programming also calls on the technique of "modeling" to make changes in just about any area. The way it works is to locate a person who has already achieved success in a goal that is similar to yours. Regardless of who the person is, present or past, you can effectively model yourself after that person. You find out everything you can about this person and how they got where they are. You will have an easier time, maybe, if your choice is a famous, sort of, person only because there will be information available. When you do modeling, you pay attention to everything about the person, including their body language, how they walk and the kind of language they use. Only choose the good and ignore the not so good, and then model your self after them because you'll have a blueprint for success.
Neuro Linguistic Programming is flexible and versatile, and who really knows but perhaps that is why it's so popular. We've only discussed several techniques and uses, and there are many more within the field. We encourage you to be open about what is possible because you just never know.
