Teaching piano to children can be gratifying for you as a musician. Imagine passing on your knowledge to a child who could one day be a famous concert pianist. Your child piano student could be jazz’s next Kieth Jarrett. Maybe he or she could be a great classical pianist or composer some day.
Many teachers can still teach kids to play the piano even if they lack that special musical inclination. The success of piano lessons also depends on the child’s attitude and yours as a teacher. The willingness of a child to learn counts a lot. In cases wherein the child enjoys learning piano, the experience can be joyful for a teacher, the student and also the parents.
If you want to teaching piano as a full time career, you have to get organized first and plan how to go about it. First, figure out how much you can charge as fees for piano lessons. This depends on your credentials. Teachers who have a degree in music can charge more than a piano hobbyist. Parents also prefer to hire professional piano teachers.
If you are in this for the long haul, you might want to get more certificates by taking advanced classes. Try to enroll in a course that also teaches you how to become a piano teacher. That is quite different from learning how to play the instrument.
You can teach piano from a university, music school or from your own studio. Teaching piano from a school cuts your earnings by half. So, you might want to consider giving piano lessons from your own home or studio so you can keep all the earnings. Teaching from home entails having to find students on your own though.
Promote your piano lessons by printing out fliers, business cards and advertising in local publications and community newsletters. Let the school in your district know you are teaching piano so they can refer clients to you. Tell friends and family to spread the word. Do some internet marketing and register your service on an online directory.
Start a referral system and offer free movie passes for those who can refer a new student. For those who are already enrolled, you can offer them one free lesson for every new student they bring to you. You don’t have to spend too much for referrals because people will appreciate anything they get for free.
Ask your students if their parents forced them to take piano lessons or if they came willingly. Willing students are easier to teach than those who were just forced by parents. You will have to adjust your teaching style for these types of students. Learn more about how to teach piano effectively and profitably. You can actually earn a lot from teaching piano.
