Positioning Yourself for a Long-Term Opportunity
Turning an internship or freelance position into a full-time opportunity can be a challenge – especially in an economy where you're competing with a highly talented competition for a few choice positions. Here's how to position yourself so others see you as ready for full-time:
Hit the Ground Running – Learn as much as you can about the business and your position before you start. Thoroughly read through the company website. Familiarize yourself with products and services offered, and get to know who's who by reading the leadership team's bios. Start reading relevant blogs to get a better sense of the overall industry. Show up one step ahead in order to impress.
Prove Yourself Worthy – As a temporary or freelance employee, you are given a short timeframe to prove yourself. You need to take on projects with enthusiasm and execute assignments well from the start. Take the extra time to make sure everything that lands on your boss's desk (or inbox) is polished and proofread. Make yourself known for your excellent work ethic and projects that exceed expectations.
Network Within – Get to know the important people within the company including relevant managers. Don't spend too much time away from your desk, but you should be socializing. It's worth the money to ask a manager to join you for lunch or a cup of coffee. Take advantage of training opportunities to learn new skills and meet new people. Attend brown bag sessions to further expand your circle within a larger company. Networking shouldn't be your number one priority, but it should be high on your to-do list.
Look the Part – You've heard it before, but it is worth repeating. If you want your boss's job, you need to dress like your boss. This advice is timeless for a reason. It works. Look the part of a full-time timer (and not an intern) and you're more likely to get the gig.
Speak Up – If you're looking for a full-time position, let people know. No one can advocate for you if they don't know what you're ultimately after.
