Panicked? Thinking about giving up your dream of getting a Bachelors or Masters Degree, because you think it is impossible to write a dissertation with hundreds of pages? Worse still, do you get nightmares whenever you think that your dissertation needs to be 10,000 words or more?

Ironically, they’re not as concerned about the harder aspects of preparing a dissertation, such as researching or fact-checking etc. What really scares them is negative perception that their dissertation must contain more than 100-200 pages, enough to actually publish a paperback novel.

Now you’re probably thinking that you have every right to be scared. What with writing and preparing all that material for a dissertation, you believe it’s a huge challenge. In reality, this isn’t the only thing you should keep worrying about. Here are some important points to help you realize that 100-200 pages aren’t all that difficult to manage, and you can easily complete this task without getting intimidated at all.

1. The first and the most important thing you need to understand is that the length of dissertation differs from subject to subject and on your specific area of specialization. For instance, if you are preparing a dissertation to complete your Masters in Psychology, then the guidelines will be different as compared to someone who’s majoring in Literature etc

2. If you’ve got a subject that you’re not actually fond of, then writing a 200 page over it isn’t just difficult; it’s downright impossible! You should ideally choose a topic that you are particularly interested in and can put your mind to it sincerely with the intent to discover more about it. This will make sure that both your heart and mind are with the dissertation.

3. Stop assuming the worst! You’re probably thinking that your dissertation must be 30000 words long, whereas it may actually be only 10000 words long. So don’t bother yourself with mere speculations that’ll ultimately de-motivate you.

4. After you find an interesting topic and start writing the dissertation, stick with it! Do not give up on it for some reason and remain committed to it. Do not let your mind tell you that this task is impossible. Believe me, it is very much possible; in fact, believe that this is the dissertation that’s going to win you your degree.
