In this fast paced age of DINK (Double Income No Kids) phenomena, marriage has turned out be a far more complex a relationship than ever before. If having one spouse wasn’t problematic enough, there exist polygamous pockets in our society that present a challenge to our rationalizing of marital patterns, and also to our understanding of what we call common sense. Yet, even in modern America there are men who dare to take on multiple wives and survive to tell the tale.
Watch Big Love to take a peek into the life of one such polygamist, Bill Henrickson, a man devoted to his three wives and to his profession as the new Utah Republican state senator. Watch this TV drama about a fictional fundamentalist Mormon family in Utah that practices polygamy. The rather large family tree comprises of Bill (played by Bill Paxton), Barbara, Nicolette and Margene Henrickson (Bill’s three wives, in decreasing order of age) and their seven children. Big Love attempts to arrive at a non judgmental portrayal of polygamy in the American society.
The always compelling, but never easy, depiction of an anomaly of our society is why you need to watch Big Love episodes, as they attempt to chronicle the difficulties that the family faces initially in hiding the truth from the rest of the society. Though the truth gets out after the protagonist’s legal wife Barbara is given the ‘mother of the year’ award, watch carefully, as the path to acceptance is long and ridden with complexities in Big Love. The drama centers around the juggling and the adjustments that the husband has to make to manage three mortgages, three wives and nine children.
The drama also centers around Joey, Bill’s younger brother, who was once an NFL star and is now reduced to living within the compound with his wife, Wanda. Watch Big Love online for its quirky depiction of Bill’s father, who suspects Bill’s mother for poisoning him. There’s also the small matter of Bill opening a new branch of his hardware store in Salt Lake City and his authoritarian father in law demanding a cut in it. Watch out for the strong performances by all involved in the show, especially the women, who are not harem girls, but strong characters with a mind of their own. Specific mention must be made of the eldest wife Barbara, who disapproves of polygamy, yet stays in the marriage out of her big love for Bill.
Watch the ever-enthralling Big Love for its originality and grandeur of vision. If you do so online, then you will be able to access superior sound and picture quality, without having to burden yourself with remembering the show’s air-timings details.
