Being in the military can be a lot of hard, dangerous work, but when you're ready to return to civilian life it does come with one big benefit: help with paying off college online degree. Yet making the move from your former work in the Army, Air Force, Marines, Navy or other branch of the armed forces into that of the academic work can take some adjustment. If you're ready to embrace your new career as a student, there are several ways you can help ease your transition.
First, make sure you're getting the psychological help you need. Many soldiers have seen things that have caused them serious psychological trauma and it can be hard to reconcile those issues with life back at home. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is not uncommon in those who have been in battle and it should never be something with which you are ashamed to pursue help and treatment. If you feel uncomfortable talking to a psychiatrist, at least find other veterans in your area who can provide support.
Along those same lines, you can make yourself feel more comfortable in your new community by seeking out those who were also formerly in the armed forces. While you can and should make friends with other students, seeking out those who have shared similar life experience degree as you and can better understand your situation can make the whole process a little easier. You'll have a support system that you can lean on if you're struggling with courses and adapting to school and you can learn from each other on what methods work best.
Finally, realize that the way things work on campus is very different from the way they might have worked in your military life. It will take some time to adapt to the workload required by college courses and to learn to communicate effectively with your professors and classmates. Don't become discouraged if you don't do everything perfectly the first time as college is meant to be a learning experience. Simply try again and learn from your new experiences as a student.
While getting used to a college environment might be hard at first, most students find a way to make it work and come out with the online college degrees they worked so hard to get. If you feel that your experiences have been especially positive, why not help other veterans adapt to life on campus with clubs and courses where you can share tips and advice? You'll make your struggles all the more worthwhile and help out fellow students in the process.
