Phalaenopsis Orchids are also called Phal Orchids by orchids growers. They are one of the most popular orchid species today. Indeed, chances are that the orchids you watched last month at that fancy hotel or the nice orchids your mum was given on the mother’s day were phalaenopsis (although you might had never heard about phal orchids until now!)

Phalaenopsis orchids are the option for many starters that begin to grow their own orchid plants, because they are very easy to have. We might say that they are, perhaps, the easiest orchid flowers to grow and care for.

Maybe the two things we must bear in mind when growing our phal orchids are light and water.

We want our phalaenopsis orchid plants to grow healthy and happy. In fact they need a moderate quantity of light during more or less 12 hours every. It is important to put them in a shadowed spot in our garden where there is indirect light. In case we decide to grow our phalaenopsis indoors, we will put them near the south or east-looking window. That way, our orchid will be exposed to enough indirect light. At any rate, they must not be receiving the direct rays of the afternoon sun.

We can also opt to grow our phalaenopsis under artificial lights. For this, fluorescent and/or grow lights can do very well; such is the phalaenopsis capacity to adapt itself to be "happy" also under an artificial climate. The only thing we should take into account is that, in this case, the light source must be at least one or two feet away from the plant.

As for water, we must know that phalaenopsis orchids like to be watered a little more frequently than other orchids like, for example, oncidiums. Nonetheless, it is also important for us to know that the orchid pot must have very good drainage; otherwise the roots of our phalaenopsis could get rot. A good practice is to have our phal orchid sitting in bark and feel the pot from time to time to make sure that it is not getting totally dry. When the bark is nearly dry, it is time for our orchid to get more water.
