Truck driving paves the way for a successful career in the transportation and logistics industry, an industry which is constantly expanding regardless of the state of the world's economy, yes it's a little slower than it used to be but people still need bread on their table.
Are you looking at becoming a trucker? Do you fancy getting behind the wheel of a rig and just driving? Well we all have to start somewhere; in my personal opinion truck driving is an amazing career to get involved in. It is however not the easiest of jobs by any means.
Use common sense when you're looking for employment, recruiters often tell you what you want to hear, I even heard one guy being told "you'll be home all of the time and earning $40k", how does that work exactly?
A trucker is not born but is made, trucking is a man's (and some woman's) professional career. Truck driving requires skills and aptitude for the task, consider that you are in control of a vehicle more powerful than a double barrel shotgun, with as much force as hundreds of horses, eighteen wheels is no small matter and takes time to gather the skills. While the more modern trucks have the mod cons such as power steering and cruise control its not guaranteed that you will get a truck like these, instead you might get an old one or a smaller one, who knows?
Routes you should look at to get you on the right road; go independent and this route will cost you money out of your back pocket or sign up with a haulage firm. If you go it alone, you can be independent and o as you please, look for contracts and work them as your own boss. Signing with a haulage firm means they will help towards or pay for the cost of your training, if you leave them within a the contract period you usually have to pay money back that they invested in you. While training how to actually pilot the truck you will learn how to cope with tricky customers and different loads as well as government legislation regarding how long you can drive for in any set period.
When choosing a career nothing is 100% right choice and becoming a trucker is not probably as perfect as you imagined at first. It takes time to adjust to a new lifestyle where you need to schedule yourself and regulate your body, sleep at strange times and be away from home for long periods of time, in fact the truck might well seem like home after a while. Trucking is a rewarding career and well worth undertaking if you can condition yourself to this new lifestyle.
