Torquay is a town in the unitary authority area of Torbay and ceremonial county of Devon, England. It is south of Exeter, north-east of Plymouth and adjoins the neighbouring town of Paignton on the west of the bay. Torquay has the third largest settlement in Devon. The town's economy was initially based upon fishing and agriculture, but in the early 19th century the town began to develop into a fashionable seaside resort. Renowned for its healthful climate, the town earned the nickname of the English Riviera. Torquay was the home of the writer Agatha Christie, who lived most of her life there. The town contains an "Agatha Christie Mile", a tour with plaques, dedicated to her life and work. There are several attractions in store for you on your Torquay holiday:
Babbacombe Model Village: This is a miniature model village made through 4 acres of beautiful miniature gardens. It is composed of many fun characters and animated features, including trains, moving vehicles and a fire breathing dragon. There is a 4D theatre, which shows amazing films.
Waves Leisure Pool: This is an indoor pool that provides fun and exercise for the entire family. It has a wave machine in the warm indoor leisure pool, as well as the flume. The pool is also available for private hire and there are various swimming lessons available throughout the year including parent and toddler sessions.
Bygones: This is a heritage centre featuring life size Victorian exhibition streets with period rooms. Over here, you can go back in time and see a real old world with olden streets, pubs and display rooms.
English Riviera Geopark Trail: This is a historic site which captures 400 million years of unique geology all within 22 miles of coastline on the English Riviera. From Berry Head to Hopes Nose, there is much to do and see in this Geopark Trail.
Living Coasts: This is a fascinating animal collection that features a range of coastal creatures from penguins to seals, puffings to waders and sea ducks. Living Coasts has sandy beaches, and rugged cliff faces. It also has an aviary that allows birds to fly free over your head.
Kents Cavern Prehistoric Caves: This is situated within the English Riviera’s Geopark and is the most important Stone Age cave in Britain. These caves are 2 million years old, and indicate the unique history uncovered by Victorian explorers of our ancestors. This cavern has won several awards such as Winner of Best Large Visitor Attraction in the South West Tourism Excellence awards 2007/8 and The English Riviera Visitor Attraction of the Year 2005.
