Summer is a great time of the year to be outside and enjoy the sunshine and fresh air. One of the best places to be during those hot summer days is on or near the water. Summer water sports provides a natural way to stay cool and they offer something for everyone. Here are a few water sports you can enjoy either by yourself or with your family.
Bluegill fishing
While any type of fishing makes for a great day spent on or near the water, bluegill fishing is especially fun for families and those on a limited budget. Fishing for bluegill and sunfish takes very little equipment and can be done from shore so there is no need for a boat and even people who lack swimming skills can enjoy this water sport.
Bluegills live mostly in shallow water and can be found in almost any lake, river or stream. Fishing for these little pan fish on still lakes with lots of water lily plants can provide quite a catch and an exciting time for both those who are new to fishing and those who are highly skilled. All you really need for a successful fishing trip is a rod, reel and worms or night crawlers. If you find the right spot, these little fish will be snapping at your hook and they can put up quite a fight despite their small size.
Canoeing or Kayaking
Canoeing or Kayaking is another great water sport that can be easily accomplished, even by beginners. However, if you are new to either of these sports it is best to start on a small, still lake as this will give you the opportunity to get comfortable in these types of craft and to get your paddling rhythm down.
There is nothing quite like the feeling of effortlessly gliding across the water on a beautiful day and a small secluded lake is the perfect setting for this sport if you enjoy really being able to soak up nature. For those who have some canoeing or kayaking experience, traveling on moving water provides a fun challenge and gives you the opportunity to increase your orienteering skills.
Tubing
Tubing is a fun and inexpensive way to take to the water. Purchasing or renting a tube is far less expensive than a boat, canoe or kayak would be and gives you more access to the cool wetness of the water since you are actually in the river or lake. Choosing a body of water with a gently flowing current can allow you to tube down stream and relax at the same time.
Tubing can be done alone, with a friend or with a large group and has become so popular that you can even purchase a tube with a cooler inside so you can enjoy a refreshing drink as you make your way down stream. When tubing, try and choose an area that does not have heavy boat traffic and where the current is flowing, but does not move too rapidly so that you can relax and enjoy the sunshine. Rivers or streams that are deep enough not to have logs or other debris that can pop your tubes are the ideal places for this sport.
There are dozens of other water sports that can be enjoyed so go ahead, get out and enjoy the summer on or in the water.
