If you are starting to do woodworking as a pastime, I support you. Woodworking is an excellent pastime. Not only is it enjoyable, but it results in useful and attractive items that you, your relatives and your friends can use around the house, and it can turn into a rewarding business.
Before you try this pastime, however, I desire to dispel the popular misunderstanding that you will constantly save a lot of money by doing it yourself. I put together oak dressers and toy boxes for my four grandchildren. They turned out marvelously, and they will almost certainly be handed down for generations, but I could have bought perfectly satisfactory dressers for a little over half the cost of building them. I don’t want to disappoint; you can have a lot of reasons for getting into this hobby, but if saving money is the main one, you will probably be disappointed for a number of reasons.
• Materials are expensive. All grades of manufactured wooden furniture are obtainable on the market. A general practice of manufacturers is to cut expenses by utilizing low-grade materials where they will not be seen. Particle board, which is reconstituted sawdust, is a frequent material used in furniture for this reason. It has very little strength; it is damaged by even a slight bit of water; and it’s unsightly. Woodworkers typically opt for quality, which means they disallow this type of material and the attitude that allows its use; as a result, your cost increases.
• Purchasing one article at a time is expensive. Even manufacturers who use all top-quality materials can save money through bulk purchases. For instance, a piece of plywood that costs you $40 can be bought for $30 or even $20 if purchased in large quantities of 100 or 1,000 units. Volume buying has an additional less obvious advantage. If your task requires only 5 feet of an 8 foot long board, for example, the extra 3-foot piece will most likely become waste; but, the manufacturer can utilize it in the subsequent unit.
• Manufacturers use an assembly line or assembly process. For nearly every cut completed on a table saw, you will have to reset the fence. Resetting the fence is time consuming and is another chance for human error. A manufacturer’s operator will set up the saw to cut a specific part, and then cut out hundreds or thousands of pieces all exactly the same dimension. With the use of this course of action, the workman becomes remarkably rapid at producing perfect parts.
• Tools are costly. If you require a particular tool to be able to complete your job correctly, the price tag of that tool has to be considered. The manufacturer can spread that cost over hundred or thousands of units.
• Your time is valuable. You’ve heard the slogan, "Time is Money." If you are doing woodworking to save money, take into consideration the value of your time, because you could most likely earn more money in your job or profession than you will save on your project by doing it yourself. If you are doing woodworking for fun and to gain a feeling of achievement, then the value of your time is not the question.
At times, to save money, we get into a position that costs more in time. The quality of the equipment you acquire is a superb example. I have never been disappointed by paying more for the most excellent tool obtainable, but I have often been dissatisfied by cheap tools. Superior tools are the least costly in the long run.
Your plans are also illustrate the significance of quality. Plans are the results on paper subsequent to all the mistakes being corrected. Lacking a high-quality plan, you have to make your mistakes on hardwood, and that costs time and money. Invest in plainly written, totally illustrated plans with complete sets of directions, like those in the hyperlinks below.
On the whole, you may spend more time and money on your woodworking project, but you will have the ultimate satisfaction of having finished a quality project that you, your family or whoever in addition might be the beneficiary, will value for a lifetime.
