Your husband sits on the couch all weekend and you want a new deck built before winter comes. Your friend has an amazing talent and passion for drawing but instead of trying to incorporate it into a career she's jobless and sits at home all day. These are the times when you want to motivate someone to get motivated! You can see their potential to accomplish great things but they are completely uninspired to get moving.
Create a Need to Do It
If you can create the need to get on it now then you may inspire them enough to get started which is how the ball gets rolling. Most people will not do something if they don't feel an urgency to do it. They may think that they have all the time in the world to accomplish it or get it done and allow their internal procrastinator to take over their decision to start doing it.
So if you hear of a one time only sale on wood for the deck then tell your husband that he may not get another chance to get wood this cheap. Chances are he will go out and start the process of buying the wood. Or if there is an opportunity for your friend to show off her drawings to potential buyers then stress the fact to her that she may not get another chance to live her dreams like this. Create the urgency to get up and get moving now or never.
Make Them Feel Like a Motivated Person
Chances are that your husband has been motivated to do a project in his past. He probably did a great job and felt extremely accomplished afterwards. That is the moment you are going to use to make him feel like he is a motivated person right now. This technique works very well because you are using ego to get him to move. You are pointing out his self-worth to him and allowing it to take over his personality.
You can do this by asking him or reminding him about the time he did that other project that turned out so well. He will start to talk about it and that will evoke the feelings of motivation he had during that time. He will start to feel like a guy who can get it done when he puts his mind to it and chances are he will start placing those emotions towards the new project of the deck. Don't be scared to make him feel like a champ in that memory because that is the feeling he will want to recreate again, and the more he remembers the feeling the quicker he will go after it again.
To motivate the friend you may remind her of times that she took a chance at something exciting and produced results that changed her life drastically. She will remember the anxiety and nervousness that she felt before taking that venture and she will also remember the feeling of taking control of her life and changing it for the better. This may invoke feelings of power in her that will allow her to start taking control of her passions and become successful with her drawing.
Get Them Excited For The Outcome
It may be the act of building the deck or displaying their work that is holding them back. It may be causing anxiety or it may just not appeal to them. But if you can find an end result that WILL appeal to them then you may have a chance at getting them motivated to do it.
For instance, you may get your husband looking forward to night-time drinks on the deck or hosting parties on his new deck. He may start to look forward to it so much that building the deck will become essential to that enjoyment.
You may tell your friend that the money she can earn from her passions will make her the envy of many people around her. You may tell her that she'll be doing what she loves and getting paid for it and literally enjoying every day she sets out to work. She may start to look forward to feeling so much that she will take the chance and put her work in an art show just to work towards that exciting outcome.
These 3 tactics have a much greater chance of working than the usual yelling, complaining, guilt-tripping, or begging that commonly gets used when trying to motivate. Use them correctly and the other person will think they are the ones that found the motivation to get moving and they will not feel forced into doing something they are not ready to do yet.
