The focus on emergency planning is so often on humans only. While it is necessary to have a plan in place for your human family, keep in mind that dogs and cats can also face dangerous situations. When preparing the family, ask yourself these questions about your pets.
Where Will Your Pet Go?
If you end up in the hospital for an extended period of time, someone needs to feed and care for your pets. Arrange for someone you trust to provide temporary shelter for your pet. Be sure this person comes over to play ball with the dog or to curl up on the couch with the cat. If your pet is bonded with their temporary shelter provider, they will be able to withstand a longer separation from you.
What Will Your Pet Need to Survive?
While making emergency survival kits for the human part of your family, don't forget Spot and Mittens. Dogs and cats have needs that must be taken care of when stranded or in danger as well. For dogs or cats, prepare a home and vehicle survival kit. These should include nonperishable pet food, bottled water with a dish, cold-weather gear, an extra leash, and emergency first aid items. Also include some chew sticks for the dog and a stuffed mouse for the cat to keep them entertained.
How Will You Pay for Medical Treatment?
Emergency surgery and other medical care can be expensive for pets just as with people. Several companies now offer high-deductible pet insurance so that in case of emergency, you can afford life-saving treatments. Depending on your car insurer, you may also be able to add medical coverage for your dog or cat in the event of an accident. Be sure to set aside funds as you are able to cover the deductibles if the need arises.
What Do Others Need To Know About Your Pet?
Attach a list of important pet contact numbers to your own emergency contact list, including your vet and temporary shelter provider. Also provide a pets information list. Just as with people, this should inform others of any allergies or medical conditions your pet has along with medications they are taking. This list should also include likes, dislikes, and other information for your family pet. If the dog eats at a certain time of the day or the cat has a favorite toy, let people know because, keep in mind, your pet is not able to and will need as much normalcy in its life as possible.
