Panic disorder is a kind of attack that results in sudden feelings of terror that occur without any warning. These kinds of attacks can happen any time even when we are asleep. A person who experiences such attacks may believe that he is having some kind of a heart attack and that he can possibly die. The terror and fear that a person experiences specifically in these kinds of panic attacks are totally unrelated to the situation or the happenings of his surroundings.
There is no particular cause for panic disorders and they are similar to other emotional symptoms. However, it is a kind of a disorder that is an outcome of ways of thinking, biological vulnerabilities, and social stress. According to some studies, it has been shown that panic disorder is a situation in an affected individual when his/her body alarm system, which is a combination of physical and mental mechanisms, triggers unnecessarily without any threat or when there is no danger. Panic disorder is genetic and it can be a family inherited disorder. However, there have been studies to find out whether nutritional deficiencies like lack of magnesium or zinc are responsible for panic attacks.
There are various symptoms and signs that are associated with panic attacks or panic disorders. The symptoms of panic disorders are pounding or racing heartbeat, chest pains, dizziness, stomach upset, light headedness, nausea, breathing difficulty, numbness or tingling in hands, chills or hot flashes, shaking or trembling, perceptual distortions or dreamlike sensations, terror, escape mentality, nervousness and fear of dying.
If or panic attacks are allowed to happen without treatment and they are left for months and even years to continue, then there can be serious complications. The complications begin to grow and become intense as years passes by. When panic attack continues, it can develop into mental illnesses, which can turn into phobias or irrational fears, agoraphobia, depressions, social situation avoidance, suicidal actions or thoughts, substance or alcohol abuse, and all these can lead to heart disease.
