Quadriplegia is a condition that is caused by cervical or neck injuries due to which a person suffers from paralysis of the limbs. The paralysis, which affects all four limbs and the torso, could either be partial or complete depending on the severity of the injury. There might be a loss of sensation as well as control of the limbs, which would impair the ability of the person to move. The condition is also referred to as tetraplegia in the UK and Europe.
Quadriplegia is caused by an injury or damage to the spinal cord in addition to the cervical vertebrae. In some cases, a tumor that exerts pressure on the vertebrae might cause it. Usually damages that occur between C1-C7 of the cervical vertebra cause this condition.
Depending on the exact location of the injury or lesion, the person could suffer from paralysis of just the hands or the legs. However, finger dysfunction is associated with almost all quadriplegic injuries. In certain cases both sensation and control of all limbs are lost resulting in complete paralysis.
Besides the loss of movement and sensation in the arms, legs or all limbs, quadriplegic could lead to other complications resulting from the loss of sensation or control of the limbs and torso. These include bladder or bowel incontinence, breathing difficulty, impotence, blood clots, spastic muscles and severe pain. Sometimes the patient would not be able to cough to bring up phlegm and may have to be put on a ventilator to assist with breathing. Besides the costs involved in treatment and diagnosing of quadriplegia, a person’s financial situation could be affected by his inability to earn a living.
Fortunately, the Canadian Government offers disability tax credit to persons suffering from quadriplegia as well as other disorders. However many people are unaware that they are untitled to these benefits and more often, they do not know how to get these benefits. The Canadian Disability Corporation offers assistance to individuals who suffer from quadriplegia by giving them a free assessment of whether they are eligible for disability tax credit. In addition, they provide them all the necessary support to help with the application procedure for getting these benefits. If you or a family member is suffering from quadriplegia, then getting a tax credit could help ease your financial situation. Contact the expert team at the Canadian Disability Corporation to get all the assistance you need.
