When you have a stomach virus, which is frequently called the stomach flu or viral gastroenteritis, you have a disorder in which a virus gets into your gastrointestinal system. The most obvious symptoms of gastroenteritis are vomiting and diarrhea, so the first question most people ask their doctor is, what do you eat when they have stomach flu.
Depending on the severity of your illness it can sometimes be a challenge to keep any food down. But foods that are easy for the system to process have the best chance to stay with you. Such foods include applesauce, bananas, eggs, gelatin, soda crackers and toast. For the most part, you must stay away from foods that are acidic, spicy or greasy. Also avoid vegetables that are high in fiber. You should also leave course cereals, dairy products and meat off your plate.
If you have viral gastroenteritis, it is extremely important to stay hydrated. Vomiting and diarrhea greatly decrease your fluid levels, and if proper fluid levels are not maintained, there is a danger of dehydration. Dehydration can be very damaging for children and seniors. Water should be your first option, but several different clear liquids are okay. Weak tea and apple juice are possibilities. Stay away from drinks that have caffeine such as coffee and certain soft drinks. Non-caffeinated soft drinks are fine but be sure to let them sit long enough to go flat. Don't have orange juice or other acidic drinks. Milk is not good when you have diarrhea. Chilled fluids seem easier for your system to handle than hot ones.
Take small, frequent sips when you're taking in liquids. Drinking a lot of fluids is smart, but if you drink too much or too fast, you risk triggering more vomiting.
Consult with your doctor before taking aspirin, ibuprofen or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Remember that antibiotics don't work on viruses, so don't take them unless your doctor recommends it. There are numerous non-prescription anti-diarrhea medicines you can get at pharmacies and supermarkets that can help. Read the instructions about dosage and follow them..
When you no longer have symptoms, you can gently resume your normal diet.
Viral gastroenteritis is a condition that goes away in a day or two, although certain kinds of viruses can keep you sick for a little more than a week. Time and rest are the best cures for a stomach virus. But knowing what to eat for stomach flu will definitely help you get over it with the least disruption in your life.
