Nephrology is the study and treatment of kidney (renal) disorders. These disorders can range from mild to severe and from acute to chronic. When these disorders are not easily treated, nephrology in New Mexico offers specialists who are well trained and experienced in dealing with all types of kidney disorders. Because these organs are vital for health, when disorders or disease affect them, this can cause serious consequences. Seeking prompt treatment for any type of renal problem should always be done to avoid severe damage to these vital organs.
Common Kidney Problems
The most common problem that occurs with the kidneys is the formation of stones. This occurs when phosphate, oxalate or calcium deposits build up causing a crystallized formation. When this occurs, severe pain results as the stone travels through the organ. Oftentimes, the nephrologists’ will recommend that the patient drink plenty of fluids to help pass the stone. If this is not effective, surgery may be necessary. Another common renal problem is infection. This can occur from untreated urinary tract infections. If the bacteria that causes the urinary tract infection travels through the urethra and up into these filtering systems, infection results. Most infections are successfully treated with medications.
Chronic Kidney Disorders
Chronic disorders occur when the kidneys become damaged, decreasing their ability to filter and eliminate waste from the body. Because of this, the toxins can enter the blood stream causing serious complications. When decreased function occurs, disorders such as nerve damage, anemia, high blood pressure, weak bones and nutritional problems can arise. This can happen over a long period, gradually worsening. Chronic disorders can develop from high blood pressure, diabetes and other problems. When detected early and with proper treatment by a nephrologist, these conditions can often be prevented from becoming more serious. If left untreated, the condition will worsen, leading to renal failure.
Renal Failure
Individuals with early stage renal failure may not experience any symptoms. As the condition progresses, there may be weakness, lethargy, swelling and shortness of breath. This occurs as the decrease in function causes electrolyte imbalances. If left untreated the condition can become life threatening.
Prevention
Keeping kidneys functioning properly can help reduce the risks of developing problems that could become serious. Limit intake of salt and fatty foods and eat more fruits and vegetables, grains and lean meat. Maintain a healthy weight and exercise regularly. Limit consumption of alcohol and quit smoking. Drink plenty of water. Check blood pressure regularly and have treated if necessary. Reduce stress levels by doing activities that are enjoyable. Diabetics should closely monitor blood pressure and blood glucose levels. Always have urinary tract infections treated promptly.
