As the seventh largest city in all of Connecticut, Danbury, founded in 1685, has a wealth of historical background as well as cultural diversity. Located in the westernmost portion of the state, Danbury is located in Fairfield County and directly borders New York state. An important military supply depot for the Continental Army during the American Revolution, Danbury is perhaps best known as "The Hat City", producing almost a quarter of all American hats in the early 1900s. Danbury also has the distinction of being named one of the best cities in America by Money Magazine in 1988, due to its location, low crime rate and highly ranked school system.
Danbury has steadily grown in population, currently estimated to house 79,743 persons as of 2009. Danbury has a lot of career opportunities due to its many large corporations, including ATMI Inc, Cartus, Ethan Allen, Praxair, and Scholastic Library Publishing. Perhaps the part of Danbury that draws most families is its school system. Danbury is home to Western Connecticut State University and Ridley-Lowell Business and Technical Institute as well as having two high schools, Danbury High School and Henry Abbott Technical High School. The school system consistently receives high praise and is a leading factor for Danbury to place high among rankings of the most desirable places to live in the country.
Playing on its rich historical tradition, Danbury has a diverse offering of attractions, including Bear Mountain Reservation, Danbury Candlewood Park which overlooks the largest lake in Connecticut, Candlewood Lake. Danbury Railway Museum and the Military Museum of Southern New England also give residents and visitors a look into Danbury's rich past. Richter Park Golf Course also calls Danbury home, and it consistently ranked among the top 25 public courses in the entire nation. Sports fans can also enjoy the Danbury Westerners, a member of the New England Collegiate Baseball League, as well as the Danbury Mad Hatters of the United Hockey League.
Danbury also has plentiful public transportation and is surrounded by Interstate 84 and US Route 7. Famous citizens of Danbury include singer Tracy Chapman, actor Jonathan Brandis, Fox's Neil Cavuto and former major leaguer Joe Lahoud.
Due to its great location, excellent school system, and a wide array of historical landmarks and low crime rate, Danbury is an excellent place to live for someone looking to experience a traditional Northeast lifestyle.
