Looking for some effective yet simple procrastination strategies? Try these and get yourself moving.
But let’s don’t kid ourselves; kicking the procrastination habit isn't always easy. In fact, it can take genuine thought (and work) on your part. If you're ready to eliminate this "spoiler" from your life, though, there Are ways to do it. In fact, the right strategy can help you beat procrastination right into the ground. And here’s one of the most effective: setting goals.
Strategy #1: Start Setting the Right Goals
One of the best procrastination strategies out there is to set the right goals for yourself. All too often, procrastination occurs when you don't want to work on the task in the first place. So you make excuses for not doing so, rationalizing your procrastination in various ways. If you’re doing that now, you probably haven’t set goals that you really want.
So, try setting some goals that are meaningful to you, goals you really want to achieve. These goals can help you avoid procrastination by motivating you instead of stranding you.
Strategy #2: Have a Clear Deadline
Another of the top strategies to beat procrastination is a clear deadline for tasks you need to complete. Deadlines promote a sense of urgency or commitment, at the very least. So, consider not only setting a deadline, but also telling other people about it as well. Thereby, you make yourself more accountable.
No, you probably don’t want to tell; I don’t like to tell, either. But when you do share your deadline with others, you’ll probably work a lot harder. Because you don't want to disappoint them, right? Two things to remember about that deadline, though: make it specific and make it actually achievable.
Strategy #3: Use Positive Reinforcement
Hey—we can all use more of that. Positive reinforcement is a wonderful procrastination strategy that helps to reinforce good behavior. So, when you achieve a deadline or a goal, reward yourself in some way. (Chocolate, anyone?) That way, you can begin shaping your behavior and habits positive directions. The reward needn’t be grand, just something you'll enjoy even for a short while. You probably do it with your kids or your pets already; why not do it with yourself?
Strategy #4: Pay Attention to Your Environment
Although you may not realize it, your environment can really affect the way you work. If you're trying to avoid procrastination, one of the best strategies is to pay attention to your surroundings, tailoring them for working. Try to remove or mask as many distractions as you can: coffee machines, water cooler, magazine racks, and so one.
If you work at home, make sure your family knows not to disturb you when you’re working. Turn off any email notifications, as well as muting the telephone ringer. Don’t take those messages and calls if they will distract you from your task. And (does this really need to be said?) don’t text unless you’re genuinely discussing the task.
Yes, You Can
When you’re trying to beat procrastination, simple strategies such as these can make a big difference. If you begin implementing them, you'll also begin to "morph" your old habit of procrastination into something much more positive. Although this will take time and attention, it’s more than achievable. In fact, it’s achievable by you—if you believe it and if you do it.
