West of Ireland Holidays - Strandhill Co Sligo
Surfing in Sligo has taken off in a big way a phenomenon that is sure to continue those that dare to try it. I am not a surfing enthusiast although perhaps I should be.
Strandhill Co Sligo is a fantastic location for all surfing and surfing related activities. What i found fascintating that similar to golf; surfing can be widely addictive much like a drug you always need to chase the dragon - (puff is just the boys pet dragon greg) although you need to be on drugs to golf in my opinion but i guess there lies the difference. When one thinks of a surfer you can tick many stereotypical boxes - in fact if you close your eyes you are bound to conjure up an image of a long blond haired, tanned 'dude' that you dislike purely because they take life as it comes. This laissez faire attitude annoys many - but its envy - the idea and freedom that the surfer conjures up makes us jealous.
The image of the hippy surfer is no longer the norm - what is happening to surfing is that it is something for everyone. The main visitor to Strandhill for a surfing weekend is very often the banker, the lawyer, the barrister and the doctor. The so called professional class are doing their 50-60 hour week than escaping for relaxation to Strandhill and to let off some steam while harnessing the power of the waves swell. The suited boys and girls (actually due to advertising we can call them the blackberry boys now) are coming to Strandhill in their droves to surf and to enjoy the waves and the unique atmosphere of the village.
What is great about Strandhill is the fact that it has a maritime centre with seaweed baths also -so while joe surfer is out on the waves joe self indulgent can relax in a seaweed bath or get a massage which as long as you don't have a hangover (the seaweed really saps your energy) will take you to new levels of relaxation.
Surfing now has become so popular that it is a major destination and weekend break attraction - the new vibrant generation are seeing changes in Strandhill as being something they want to be part of. No more are the weekend breaks away to get hammered drunk being courted - it is now about quality of break and each decision regarding location is carefull scrutinised. These reasons are why Strandhill is being courted so much - a golf course, seaweed bath and surfing - what more could the young getaway enthusiast want.
What Strandhill was lacking for a long time was quality accommodation; amazing really considering that Strandhill is so popular, there was no accommodation. Well in 2011 that problems was solved with the opening of a brand new 4 star hotel which is proving so popular with visitors, as it has spectacular sea views, great B&B and what is most popular is the Balconies from which you can view the sun sets in the summer.
Strandhill also has five bars and restaurants 2 cafes and an airport - it is also the capital of the Sligo Adventure Hub which aims to bring tourists seeking amusement into the village.
So if you want a small bit of advice - take a look at Strandhill - it will surprise and delight you.
