Although it is simple to read, many novice guitar players appear to be daunted by the prospect of learning something new. The real difficulty with studying how to read guitar tabs is more of the subconscious block than a real challenge.

Guitar tabs aren't anything more or less than a picture of the neck of the guitar. You appear in the tab about the page and you begin to see the guitar strings. Obviously for any newbie guitar player the guitar strings on the guitar can be a bit scary.

The letters on the end from the guitar strings are the names from the guitar strings, in other words what they are called from the notes that sound when you take part in the open guitar strings. You will notice that at the very top is really a lower case e and also at the bottom is really a capital E. The top e is the thinnest guitar string about the guitar, also known as the very first string. The E at the end is the broadest guitar string, also called the sixth string.

The guitar strings with little numbers in it would be the A and D guitar strings, and the tab is telling us to place a finger at the second fret about the A guitar string and play that note. Next the tabs is telling us to position a finger in the first guitar fret about the D guitar string, play that cord after which move the finger up to the second guitar fret, or place another finger at the second guitar fret and play that note.

When we are learning an audio lesson the fingering is still usually left up to us but most from the musical notation software programs have the facility to show left hand guitar fingering and/or the use of the right hand fingers when required. For hand written tabs it helps make the tab very cluttered to include the fingerings for people to follow.

It's impossible to demonstrate the cord values in tab but when you're learning an audio lesson you're already familiar with this can just not be an excessive amount of a problem. If you're learning a piece of music that you're not familiar with then guitar tab won't assist you to much, but there's a solution. For those who have learnt to read tab you can download among the guitar writing programs like Power Tab or TablEdit. It will import your ASCII tab or MIDI and play it for you as well as display it in standard musical notation along with tab.
