5 Ways to Save Money on a Custom Remodel

In a tight economy, homeowners sometimes put off a remodeling project because they are not sure that they can afford it. Projects that homeowners would like to do take a back seat to the must-have replacements and upgrades. However, a beautiful kitchen, bath or bedroom remodel can be done affordably if the homeowner chooses carefully, sets a strict budget and works with a quality reliable contractor.
Design
Before deciding exactly what the remodel will encompass, homeowners can come up with some ideas of their own while keeping an open mind. Determine a budget. Homeowners should talk to a residential remodeling company’s designer about the possibilities. This is the best way to find out if the project can be done at that price before deciding it’s impossible. Industry professionals may have some ideas to do a great home addition or kitchen remodel without breaking the bank.
Discount
Ask the custom remodeling company about any leftover materials they have on hand from another project. The home improvement contractor may be willing to give the client a break on cost. If it is sitting in storage and will not be used, the company can sell it at a discount and recoup some of their expenses. Materials may be unused for a variety of reasons, not necessarily because it is defective. Sometimes people change their minds about what the room should look like once they see the materials. They might not be what they had in mind. Perhaps the color did not blend with the rest of the decor as they expected. There was more left over than expected. Maybe the project fell through and the distributor or manufacturer would not take the materials back simply because someone changed their mind.
Scope
The scope of work has the biggest impact on the price of the project. Rather than building an addition to the home’s exterior, it may be less expensive to knock down a wall and open up existing space. A garage can be converted, or the attic space refurbished.
Avoid Extravagance
Use less expensive materials when they are not affordable. Sometimes the less expensive alternative is high in quality and low in price. For example, is it absolutely necessary to use imported exotic wood flooring on the new bedroom floor? There are several types of hardwood floors with rich coloring and respectable durability that can enhance a room without spending a lot of money. A dark domestic wood with a quality finish can give a room depth at a less expensive price.
Reputation
Use a reliable contractor. Quality remodeling companies will not deliberately overcharge clients for a custom home renovation. Companies that are more concerned with making money than providing quality work at an affordable price do not expect repeat customers. A contractor that helps customers stay on budget and offers affordable alternatives to expensive renovation ideas is typically who respects clients and hopes for honest referrals from satisfied clients.
