Foot problems are a common issue with diabetics. Diabetes can contribute to foot problems due to poor blood circulation, resulting in nerve damage and slowed healing. Because of nerve damage, diabetics may not be aware they may have cuts, bruises or other damage to their feet which can easily lead to infection. Most foot-related problems can be minimized or avoided entirely by daily monitoring and quickly taking action if there is a problem. Fortunately, there are many steps that diabetics can take to improve blood circulation and overall foot health.
Diabetics often have poor blood circulation, which can affect foot health. Possible initial signs of poor circulation to the feet are numbness, tingling or pain in the lower legs and feet while walking. Along with monitoring blood fat and glucose levels, circulation can be improved by avoiding smoking and getting a moderate amount of daily exercise. It is important to make sure to wear diabetic socks and medically approved and properly sized shoes that will not impede circulation to the lower legs and feet.
Daily foot care that diabetic patients can perform at home involve checking the feet daily for certain changes that typically occur with this condition. Look for any signs of swelling or redness, which may be signs of an infection. It is important to wash the feet daily and make sure that they are completely dry after washing, especially between the toes. When taking a bath, check the temperature of the bathwater with an elbow to avoid scalding. If the feet appear to be unusually dry, as in the case of flaky skin or cracked heels, moisturize the skin with a medically approved cream, being careful to avoid putting any between the toes.
It is important for diabetics to avoid unnecessary injury by avoiding going barefoot. It is advised to instead wear diabetic socks for foot protection. Diabetics often complain of feet getting cold, and diabetic socks will also provided added warmth. These special socks can help you avoid the risk of hampering the circulation to your feet like regular socks and other footwear. Avoid overheating or burning feet by keeping them a safe distance away from dangerous heat sources like radiant heaters or fireplaces.
It is important for diabetics to remember that most foot problems can be avoided with daily monitoring of their feet, good hygiene, and reacting quickly to any sign of problems. Some indications may include numbness and tingling, pain or visible injuries. Also remember to consult with a doctor and have a medical professional check the area of concern on a regular basis.
