Housing Programs That Can Help You Own Your Dream Charleston Homes For Sale

There are new Charleston homes for sale and new communities being developed everyday especially those that are found in the coastal region of the area, which is called Lowcountry. Once a location that was known for its agricultural wealth, the Lowcountry today is internationally renowned for its historic cities and communities, its natural beauty, and its unique cultural heritage, which have attracted millions of visitors and thousands of new residents.

The housing assistance programs administered by the City of Charleston, and supported by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), are designed to reconstruct and enhance owner-occupied houses in designated areas in the City of Charleston. Here are the programs:
The Lowcountry Housing Trust (LHT). The LHT is an independent, non-profit corporation that provides capital to assist non-profit organizations, government entities, and private developers in developing affordable housing in the greater Tri-County area. The Trust, which grew out of the widely recognized Mayor's Council on Homelessness and Affordable Housing, was created to foster a regional approach to the need for housing. LHT provides funding for the construction or rehabilitation of affordable housing in Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester Counties.
Enston Homes Foundation. The Enston Homes Foundation is a grant program designed to assist elderly, low and moderate-income individuals and families in Charleston to prevent homelessness. The funds in the program may be used for rental subsidies, moving expenses construction and rehabilitation costs, predevelopment costs including acquisition of property and professional services such as engineering, architectural and environmental testing, transitional housing and utility assistance associated with the creation of affordable housing for the elderly.
The Homeownership Initiative (HI). The Homeownership Initiative is an exciting program designed to ensure that residents from diverse economic backgrounds share in the American dream of homeownership. The Department of Housing and Community Development works closely with non-profit developers to implement the Homeownership Initiative. The Initiative, as currently designed, will provide a combination of 133 newly constructed and rehabilitated homes for sale to low- and moderate-income families in five neighborhoods of the city. In addition, the Initiative aims to preserve the affordability of housing and character of these diverse neighborhoods on Charleston's peninsula that are being revitalized but under increasing pressure of gentrification.
