An electrical rewire is one of the most disruptive works that can happen to a house. It can be described as a main project and you should collect as much information as you can before making the decision to rewire.
To determine the exact working order of the electrical installation, have a Periodic Inspection Report carried out so as to spot problematic areas. f you just look at your fuse panel and you notice that cables are coming off, then it may be time to have a rewire anyway.
You have two ways to rewire a home and one would be to rewire it ones self. Rewiring the house by yourself is no joke because a lot of work needs to be carried out. You will want to have at least a basic understanding of electricity otherwise you could end up by having a disaster. Do not forget that electricity can and often does kill.
Secondly, and by far the best method to rewire a home is to pay a specialist electrician. Why? Because they know the set standards for electrical installations as well as safety issues in relation to electricity.
Here are a few tips on selecting the better deals from electrical contractors.
-
Initially you must make sure that you are hiring a certified electrician who is correctly accredited by the related authorities. Examine his or her accreditations and get them to give full details. They should have a card and you should be able to check their registration number with the proper body.
-
Your next move should be to get information about or her previous works. Ideally from previous customers. You should be asking questions regarding the rewiring that they did for them. Did they encounter any problems with the contractor along the way? Are they satisfied with his or her work? If they are not, then you had better look for another contractor.
-
If you are satisfied with the information about their previous work, the next thing to do is to agree a fixed price contract. Usually it is the contractor who will present you a proposal and later a contract about the work that should be done. Read the fine print and make sure that there are no hidden charges. And also make sure that you are covered with a full warranty on the work done.
-
In order to get a good price, get at least three contractors to bid on your house rewire - unless you know a contractor personally and are satisfied with their work and price. Remember that this is a major task that can happen once in your life and your safety and that of your family is at stake, so the cheapest price is not always the best price.
5.Agree on things like when will the work start and how long it will take.
As this is a major undertaking on your house, disruption of your daily routine is inevitable, but get an idea just how much disruption. Will you will need to move out, for example? For things such as moving the furniture, or removing and repairing part of the ceiling, you should make it clear with the contractor who is responsible for those before the project begins. It is always a good idea to gather all the information you will need before embarking on any undertaking such as a major house rewire.
