In response to the recent economic crisis, many lending companies in the industry have become more exacting in extending credit to consumers. If you have less than perfect credit, you may find it more difficult to get an approval.
In fact, if you have bad credit, you’ll need to be extra careful in your search for financing to avoid predatory lenders who may take advantage of your situation. Yes, there are lenders in the market offering bad credit loans that impose excessive interest rates and unreasonable terms. If you’re not aware of their tactics, you might sign up for the wrong deal.
But did you know that there are other aspects of your life which can be affected by your personal credit? For instance, if you’re looking for a job, having bad credit can actually hurt you, even if you’ve done well in the interview and you have an impressive resume.
A potential employer may check into your credit report and if your record shows delinquent accounts or a poor credit score, you may not get hired for the job. Other qualified applicants with a better credit standing will surely land on the position which could’ve been yours if only you had good credit.
Now, if you’re in search for an apartment to rent, most likely having bad credit will not leave you homeless. However, it can be a huge drawback on your part because most landlords use credit history to check an individual’s background. Hence, if you have bad credit, you might not get accepted as tenant in your preferred locations or you might be required to pay a higher advanced deposit to make up for the risk.
Yes, lending companies are not the only ones who are interested about your personal credit history. Potential employers and landlords might also be influenced by what they see from your credit report. Even insurance companies use credit scores as a major determinant when reviewing insurance applications.
Needless to say, if you’re going to apply for a loan such as a car loan, personal loan or mortgage, your credit score can make a big difference on the type of the loan deal that you can get. Take note that lenders reserve their best deals to customers with good to excellent rating. Although subprime loans are available in the market, this type of financing is often expected to have higher rates and fees so you need to research extensively in order to find a reasonable offer.
Is it possible for you to repair bad credit? Of course, it is. Order a copy of your personal credit report to know the reason why you have a low score. If you find errors or inaccurate information, send a dispute letter to the bureaus. If there are past due charges in any of your accounts, do your best to pay them off and keep up with your current bills.
After 3 to 6 months, you should be able to improve your credit score, depending on how much improvement needs to be done. In some cases, it might take up to 12 months to completely regain a good credit standing but rest assured that the sooner you take action, the sooner you can enjoy the benefits of having good credit.
