The Different Types Of Health Insurance

In today's society there are many different types of health insurance that are available to anyone that needs access to it. Choosing the right type of health insurance depends on the person and what kind of coverage they are looking for to meet their needs. Factors in selecting the right coverage can range anywhere from the cost of the insurance, to the overall minimal coverage itself, and the policies that come with it.
One type is catastrophic which covers many different kinds of medical conditions. It is usually very low but the deductibles that come with it are relatively high. Deductibles are the money that you must pay out of pocket before the insurance itself kicks in. This kind of policy is for people who have the necessary financial means for handling steady illnesses and frequent hospitalization.
Short Term is another method that bears similarities to the well known life insurance plans. This policy can be purchased only at a certain period of time with coverage for catastrophic and comprehensive plans, with comprehensive being the most expensive. Short-term health coverage comes with a very strict qualifying method that may not cover any preexisting medical conditions. Medical conditions such as pregnancy and childbirth are also usually not covered by it.
Another type is called the Preferred Provider Organization (PPO). The medical costs that come with it are fully covered if it is provided by a doctor or hospital belonging to the PPO's network of health care provider. Any treatment performed outside of this plan is covered but the rate for it reduced greatly.Policy holders are held responsible for any differences if they are seeking outside treatment from any other network.
PPO's are also known as the group discount form of a health policy which maintains administrative control over a set of doctors and hospitals that enable them to provide health care at a discount for the patient. The organization may also require approval before allowing any major medical services.
Another health insurance policy is Health Maintenance Organization (HMO). This form of insurance severely restricts the type of non-medical services a patient may use. The greatest advantage of this is that it has some of the lowest premiums for coverage. This plan also generates heavy criticism because doctors receive great incentives by decreasing the amount of medical services given to patients.
One way this is done is by offering doctors a fixed monthly fee for every patient regardless of what kind of treatment that is given. The great thing about HMOs is that they cover many preventive procedures like physicals and mammograms. Medicaid and Medicare plans are also considered forms of coverage that are available to the public and are for those that are retiring or have low income.
The last type of coverage is Full Health. It is available to anyone and offers the best preventative coverage but it is the most costly. It covers all illnesses and will allow treatment to be given almost anywhere. They come with negotiable deductibles that are in the hands of the policy holder who decide how much he/she will pay.
