The challenge is that the majority of students are not happy about attending summer schools because this implies that they miss out on all the fun their friends will have without them. For the most part, this is true so the challenge lies in easing the pain as much as possible by enrolling them in a school that gives importance to recreational activities as well. Such organisations have the option for large group accommodation in a place of relaxation and fun that eliminates the notion of boredom. In fact establishments like these house amenities such as a leisure centre for full use of their students removing the school stigma and replacing that with a resort like atmosphere. Such venues will truly change how students regard summer schools and parents can expect that they will look forward to attending it.
Summer schools also have programs that are non-academic which students that have the privilege in taking them up look forward to. These can range from any kind of talent programs such as drama or acting classes, arts and crafts classes, cooking and culinary classes, singing and musical instrument classes or classes that further enhance ones raw ability for any kind of sport.
Also, an important objective to summer school is preparing incoming college freshmen to qualify to the top universities they are aiming for. These reviews on subjects that are likely to be a part of the qualifying exam help a large percentage of examinees in passing the entrance test if they have enrolled at the right school.
These programs have proven to help students in exploring and discovering new interests and skills in such a way it is never covered in a traditional school year curriculum. It has also proven to improve the learning curve in a sense that students comprehend what is being taught in faster pace compared to other students in the same age group. Other benefits are noted as improving communication skills that allows better interaction with other students, boosting self-confidence and learning leadership skills. The benefits can be attributed to education being taught in a smaller group where teachers have a degree of flexibility in the method of teaching applicable to the group personality, better awareness of individual performance while daily interaction is made possible which cannot be done in a traditional classroom setting. Also, students are relaxed as they are only focusing on a number of classes versus the full load of a regular school year.
There are a myriad of summer programs out there so it is important to choose wisely. Before going ahead and choosing what you think the best school is, it is important that you remember that it is not you going to be attending school. Make sure you discuss the options with the student so they can feel like they are being given a choice in schooling instead of just being ordered around. This makes the discussion a little easier to tackle as he or she should never feel like going to school is an obligation. If possible, take the student with you when visiting the school grounds so he or she can make an informed decision of where they prefer to enrol in. Surely, if a student sees a setting that suits his interest, it would generally affect a positive change in his attitude towards missing all the fun.
Another step to take in talking a student into attending summer school is explaining the benefits listed above. A negative attitude is usually because the student sees his or her attendance due to a failure instead of understanding the advantages one can get out of it. You know this already but the student does not.
Whether students attend summer schools for reasons of remedial, advancement or talent classes, one can say that the investment that goes into it is an added expense. To get the most out of the experience, make sure that the student also gets the rest and relaxation every individual needs by looking into schools that offer large group accommodation with amenities for a recreational activities or a sports and leisure centre. In this way, he or she would feel like he is not missing out on all the fun but has the opportunity to make an ideal vacation of his or her own.
