The DePuy hip recall on its DePuy ASR Acetabular System and the DePuy ASR Hip resurfacing system will be affecting more than 93,000 individuals around the world. The two DePuy hip replacement systems were recalled due to the high revision rate of the product.
The revision rate of the product hit a very high revision rate of about 12% of patients who have been implanted by the ASR Resurfacing System and 13% of patients who had the ASR total hip replacement after five years of being implanted. All of the patients are subject to a replacement or the revision surgery.
Those individuals who had their hip replacement prior to the date of manufacture and marketing of the product which is July 2003 can be subject to the DePuy hip recall. Anyone who had their hip surgery before July 2003 are not affected by the recall, however those who had their surgeries on or before the date should immediately contact their surgeon or physician and ask if they got the defective product.
Patients who have been implanted by the defective device often have a number of symptoms. The patients complain of severe pain, swelling and some suffers with problems in walking. Normally, these symptoms really occur at some time after the surgery; however, if you are suffering from these symptoms for a long time now, you should start to contact your physician. This may mean that there are malfunction of the device implanted on you. The hip could be detached from the bone in the proper position or the implant may have been broken.
Once you figured out that you have been implanted by the two defective hip replacement systems, and have been suffering from severe pain caused by your hip replacement products you should visit your doctor immediately for evaluation and assessment.
The doctor may ask a blood test or imaging scans to ascertain if your hip device is functioning properly. If your blood test resulted to a certain level of microscopic metal particles, he might want to ask for a second or a third blood testing. He may also want to take x-rays of your hip to see if the devoice is still positioned properly, if there have been damages or if it is still properly attached.
If the doctor confirmed that there is a defect in the hip replacement device that was implanted on you, he may recommend a hip replacement or a revision surgery as a result of the DePuy HIP recall.
