What makes eye-catching design? Every logo has that potential but what really makes you remember some logos almost instantly forever while others fade away never to be thought of again even if you see them? Honestly, it's easier than you think. And it doesn't take a million dollar budget to do it. By applying just a few easy steps you can make your logo as easily memorable and eye-catching as some of the greatest brands in the world! Follow these basic steps and you can guarantee success with your logo.

Make sure your logo design relates to the customer - not you

You should never make the mistake of assuming your logo relates to your customer simply because it's visually pleasing to you. You should always test your logo design ideas in focus groups to get potential customer feedback before you apply anything. Just because your logo is great to you doesn't mean your customers will always get it.

Here's a recent example. Remember the controversy sometime ago when Gap® department store changed it's logo design without getting customer response? The outcry was so great that some longtime customers threatened to stop spending money with the company. Now your customers may not go that far but it's a good example of never assuming the customer relates.

Make your logo design ad worthy

Remember. Your logo will appear almost everywhere you advertise. Making it ad worthy is a critical part to getting your business noticed. Pay close attention to color scheme, layout, balance and the fonts you select.

-Color Scheme: This is the combination of colors you use to illustrate your logo design. The reason color is so important is because not all colors translate well between mediums. For instance a logo consisting of several colors, gradients, etc may look great on your website but will fizzle in a black and white ad. Always make sure your logo has just as much pazazz in black and white as it does in color.

-Layout and Balance: This is how you position the elements of your logo design to create its overall composition. Be sure your layout is balanced as equally as possible meaning it has as much design character on both sides or all sides (top to bottom, left to right). An off-balance logo design can cause discomfort to the viewer's eye making it nearly impossible for the brain to interpret or remember it.

-Font: The right font choice is a key element to any successful branding message. It can either make or break your logo design completely. Make sure your typography choice fits your logo design concept so that it captures the emotion you want your customer to receive from it. You'll probably never see a hardcore motorcycle club using soft scripted fonts in their logo or a wedding planner using gothic, grundgy fonts in hers. Always remember fonts create personality by themselves, which is why most logos contain just fonts. Use them wisely and you will create an awesome logo design that's perfect for your business.

Keep your logo design focused and easily identifiable

The last step is to keep your logo simple and focused. Most customers won't take the time to figure out what your logo means. Our attentions spans won't allow it.

At best you have a 2 to 3 second window to convince a buyer to look further. In other words you have to spell it out to the point of almost making it "dummy proof". If your business sells steaks, make your logo represents enjoying a steak, if you paint houses, make sure you logo says to the customer you paint houses. Don't be mistaken It's always good to be original but don't go so far outside the box that people don't understand what you do. Never make your logo design so complicated that it confuses your customers. That's a surefire way to kill your conversions.
