Cartilage damage is the initial stage of osteoarthritis. When the damages of the cartilages are not treated for a long time, they lead to arthritic pains of joints at later stages. There are several terms that are used to describe the various painful conditions of the cartilage based on which the technique for treatment is ultimately decided. Some of the terms include acute damage, chronic degeneration, chondromalacia, osteochondritis dissicans, etc. Once the patient is diagnosed and the condition from which he belongs is identified, the proper technique for his cartilage restoration treatment is decided.
As far as the procedures used for proper cartilage restoration is concerned, these torn elastic tissues can be treated through two below-mentioned techniques:
Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation (ACI): A cartilage cannot repair itself if it gets damaged. This cartilage restoration process is used to create a fresh and healthy tissue to substitute the previous injured ones. With the help of arthroscopy, the healthy cartilage cells are extracted from the body of the patient itself and the same are used to make new ones called chondrocytes. Three to four weeks is the time taken to conduct the entire process.
Arthroscopic surgery: In this case of cartilage restoration, the damaged tissues are taken and sewed back together.
Once the whole process is complete, you should take assistance from your therapist and then get back to your daily activities, thereby keeping in mind the precautions that he wants you to take for proper performance optimization.
