Spring has finally arrived, and for fly fishing enthusiasts that can only mean that trout season is here! Each year, thousands of new and more experienced fishing games players take to the streams and rivers in hopes of catching a trout. For all of you new fly fishermen out there, here are some tips to help you catch the trout!

Essentially, these fly fishing techniques, do not require you to learn a new casting style all together, but rather making a few simple adjustments. By making these adjustments, you can catch more trout then you ever dreamed of.

Using Less Weight When Nymph Fishing – As spring progresses into summer which in turn progresses into fall, the trout’s feeding habits tend to compromise more to their surroundings. For the average person, this means, that the trout is willing to come to you as opposed to you going to it. In turn, you no longer have to put a ton of weight on your fly fishing rods, when using nymph bait to attract the trout. The reason for this is that the trout is willing to go from its bottom of the creek feeding zone up to the subsurface just below the surface, in order to latch onto the bait.

What’s more, it is better to use less weight as the trout fishing season progresses, because the closer to the surface your bait is, the more time you can spend on the river. This in turn, also makes your job angling your fly fishing rod much easier, as your line is less likely to get tangled, and also not as likely to latch onto a rock.

Raising Your Rod Height – Over the last couple of fly fishing seasons, we have found that the simple adjustment of raising our rods a few feet off the boat has garnered better results. By lifting the rod off the water and extending your arm to a better angle, you can make it easier to mend. This in turn, can allow you to attract more fish, since your line is providing more action then it would, if you had just left it sitting in your boat.
