Perinatologists in Las Vegas are specialized obstetricians who are experts in maternal-fetal health. These physicians earn the title of perinatologists after becoming an obstetrician and continuing their education in high-risk pregnancies. This usually requires two to three more years of clinicals, a research fellowship as well as advanced education in comprehensive diagnostic ultrasounds of fetuses.
It is estimated that about 10% of pregnant women will need the expertise of a perinatologist due to serious complications occurring. These doctors are able to diagnosis complicated issues as well as perform procedures that can be difficult such as cordocentesis and amniocentesis. Perinatologists are also experts at examining the fetus in looking for any abnormalities of the neck and head as well as the heart, spine, diaphragm, chest, kidneys, stomach, abdominal wall, bladder and the umbilical cord. Depending on the complications involved, these physicians may also plan, coordinate and deliver the baby as well as call in a neonatologist if the newborn needs special care. When high-risk babies are being delivered, these doctors gather a team of caregivers to help ensure a successful birth. These include the primary care physician, pediatric surgeons, neonatal care specialists and pediatric cardiologists.
Health problems that can cause complications during pregnancy include high blood pressure, kidney disease, heart problems, diabetes and asthma. Some of these conditions can worsen during the months of pregnancy or other conditions can also cause the fetus to become high risk. These include being overweight or underweight, being older, previous difficulties with pregnancy, having an abnormal screening test such as an alpha-fetoprotein test or carrying more than one child. Other reasons that a perinatologist may need to be seen is if the mother goes into labor too early, if the unborn baby is not growing properly or if diabetes or high blood pressure develop while pregnant. Being cared for by these highly skilled physicians can help ensure the health of the mother as well as the baby.
To help ensure that complications do not arise during pregnancy, there are some things that can reduce complications in mothers-to-be, fetuses and newborns. These include careful monitoring of diabetes and high blood pressure if present. Pregnant women should not smoke, as this will help will help prevent low birth weight in newborns. Dietary supplements and prenatal vitamins are important additions to the diet. Taking 400 mcg of folic acid each day to reduce the risk of spina bifida is part of this regimen. Mothers-to-be should avoid alcohol during pregnancy and discuss any medications that are currently being taken with a physician, as many prescription or over-the-counter drugs can cause harm to unborn babies. Diet is critical. Throughout pregnancy, women should eat nutritious foods and keep physically active unless instructed otherwise by a doctor.
