If you have ever had a migraine then just the thought of it can make you shudder. It seems that when it comes to headaches, there are two kinds of people. The kind that get migraines, and the kind that don't. For those that have never had a migraine before, they often get confused as to why someone could be so debilitated with what they consider to be a "simple headache". But the truth is that migraines are anything but simple, and they are not as uncommon as you think. The World Health Organization states that approximately 17% of the global population suffers from migraines, and when it comes to numbers, that means 303 million people in the world know exactly what a migraine is, and just how debilitating it can be. If you think your headaches are migraines, find out here what the common migraine symptoms are, and how to treat them fast.
Migraine pain is described as moderate to severe pain that can occur on either one or both sides of your head. It comes as a pulsating or throbbing pain in the head, and often worsens with increased physical activity. It is frequently accompanied by vomiting or nausea, and is also well known to bring with it a hyper-sensitivity to sound and light. In some cases, a person will get what is called an "aura" before they actually get the headache. This is a sense of "premonition" that the migraine is pending, and is often accompanied with symptoms like increased thirst or hunger, intense energy periods, and maybe even depression or irritability. For most people with migraines, isolating themselves to a cool, dark room is often their first mode of treatment when this aura presents.
There are two known migraine types, and they are often referred to as classic migraine or common migraine. With common migraine, no aura is experienced, but the classic migraine presents with an aura that arrives approximately fifteen to thirty minutes before the actual headache. In addition to this "premonition", these migraine sufferers may also experience seeing spots, light flashes, and tingling in the arms and legs.
Another common element to migraines is the infamous trigger. If you are a migraine sufferer or know one well, then you have probably heard the term migraine trigger. For many people, knowing and avoiding these triggers will often help to avoid the migraine. Common migraine triggers include hormone changes, weather changes, chocolate, and red wine, though each migraine may have its own trigger and they all differ by the individual. If you start to notice a pattern with your headaches, if they are for example occurring more frequently after a few glasses of red wine, this is a good way to note what your triggers are, and potentially avoid migraines in the future.
Treatment of migraine headaches will vary from one person to the next, and there are a wide variety of FDA approved medications that are exclusively reserved for migraine headaches. Often enough these medications will target the source of throbbing and pulsating pain, but these medications will only work if that is the kind of migraine that you have. The reason so many new medications keep cropping up for migraines is that, not all of them work for many people, and migraine sufferers frequently have to spend a fortune on trying one medication after another until they find one that works. Sometimes just trying a well tolerated pain medication like Ultram is enough. With pain being the key factor in affecting quality of life for migraine sufferers, pain control should be your first step. Because migraines are so difficult to treat effectively, medication like Ultram is proving time and time again to target the root of migraine pain fast.
