Allergies were once thought to be a human only problem, but this has been proven to be quite untrue! In fact, many animals and especially dogs suffer from this problem and it can be a very painful thing to go through. Some of the symptoms of allergies are dry skin, coughing, itching, flees and other physical problems. Whatever your dog is going through, don't despair because there are many dog allergies treatment which you can try to give them some relief.
Some of the most common problems are atopy which is also called inhalant allergy and is definitely one of the more widespread types. This can be a seasonal problem but is can also be present throughout the year. Some other types are food allergies and contact dermatitis.
One of the best ways of treatment is avoidance. Prevention over cure is probably one of the best ways to avoid this problem as it can be quite costly to treat. Some of the allergens that usually trigger attacks are house dust, pollen, mold and dust mites. If you have these present in your house, it is best to treat the cause of them not only for your dog but also for yourself and family. These same substances also trigger allergies in humans, so you will be doing your pet and yourself a huge favor.
One way to reduce the effect of pollen on your pet is to keep the grass low and make sure there are no bushes in your yard. This will reduce any effects the pollen may have on your dog and you should also bathe him/her after each play session.
Many times these preventative measures are enough to keep any health problems at bay. However, if they are not enough of the problem is too far along, then you should definitely look at some over the counter solutions. One of the more popular one are topical medications. These can be purchased as pet shampoos which you can use to bathe your pet with regularly. Make sure to read the instructions properly before applying them as it can go a long way to giving your pet the relief they need.
Another great form of treatment that you can use is antihistamines. Antihistamines have been used and been found to be very effective when treating pets as well as people who suffer from allergic reactions. The rate of success is currently at 30% for dogs and a whopping 70% for cats. If you use these along with fatty acids it has shown to be even more effective.
If the previous solutions don't work then the next best solution to turn to are steroids. However, be warned that you should only use this solution if the problem is extremely bad and only under the recommendation of a medical professional or veterinarian. The reason for such caution is because steroids can be very dangerous and are very easy to over abuse. They can serious damage your body and your pet so a lot of precautions need to be taken. However, they are proven to be extremely effective against severe forms of itching, coughing and allergy related pain. Steroids will definitely give your pet the relief they need, just remember to use with care.
These are just a few suggestions for dog allergies treatment that can definitely help you to help your pet. However, before administering any drugs, be sure to get the advice of a qualified veterinarian.
