By definition, a Government Whistleblower Law is a law set to protect an employee or government official that reports the crime or unfair practices of a government official, employer, or other highly respected official.
Reporting a Government official or an employer can be a dangerous move. They have the power to fire you or to distribute punishment that can be in the form of financial or by placing you in a jail setting. The Government Whistleblower Law has been established to protect the individuals that see highly valued officials or employers making mistakes or breaking the law.
Now that Government Whistleblower Law has been created, it is a very important part of our laws and rules. These laws assure that an individual cannot lose their hard-earned government pension just for reporting a violation by other officials.
The creation of Government Whistleblower Law was needed because in the past, people have suffered for doing the right thing and bringing illegal or shady practices of other officials to light. People have been demoted, fired, and in extreme cases, even killed for reporting Government officials or employers.
Some whistleblowers are looked at as selfless individuals and others are looked at as "tattle tales". There is no way to determine the exact reason an employee of the government would risk everything to protect other individuals and blow the whistle on their boss or co-worker. Remember, government officials are people too. They are not above breaking the law or trying to supplement their own needs or financial situation at the cost of the public.
Whistleblowers are a special section of the governmental employees. These individuals take the risk of being discriminated against by coworkers or employers to notify the public of waste or illegal activities within the government offices. They should be rewarded not retaliated against. The Government Whistleblower Laws have been set up to assure no one loses their job simply for notifying the public of wrongdoing of their public officials.
Public officials waste or their wrongdoings can cause massive issues for the public or the municipal that they represent. Some highly placed officials have been known to use or cause excessive waste of the dollars they are allotted and caused major financial instability for their geographic location.
Other public officials have been known to take money to vote a certain way in a particular election or vote. All actions that are covered by the Government Whistleblower Law are extremely shady and can seriously cause the scales of justice to be unfairly and unjustly tilted. The very laws that are meant to protect us, when violated by government officials should be reported. The Whistleblower Laws are set up to protect the public. They protect the public by making an individual safe to report the wrong doing without fear of losing their job or without the fear of any type of retaliation at all.
Whistleblowers are sometimes given a bad rap as a tattletale. Just think of it this way, if your governor was secretly taking the cities money and pocketing it and one of the mayor’s assistants knew of the theft, how would you feel about that assistant keeping quiet that the mayor was stealing taxpayer’s money?
Why would it be wrong if that assistant did not utilize the Government Whistleblowers Law and reported your mayor? In short, that is what you would expect the assistant to do. So how is someone wrong for using the law to protect them against retaliation for protecting you, the public?
