Each state has its own set rules when it comes to safety laws. Below is a list of some of Colorado’s safety laws that will help keep you and your passengers safe while driving.
Seat belts:
Colorado’s seat belt law is secondary, which means you cannot be pulled over for this violation only. There must be another infraction involved, such as speeding, driving through a stop light or not coming to a complete stop at a stop sign.
It is mandatory for the driver of a vehicle and all front seat passengers to wear seat belts.
Exceptions to this rule are as follows:
• Passengers with a psychological or physical impairment are excused from wearing a seat belt. However, a medical statement should always be kept in the drivers possession explaining what the disability is and the reason why a seat belt is inappropriate.
• 1968 was when seat belts became federally mandated. If you are operating a vehicle manufactured before this year you are exempt from the seat belt law.
Cell Phone Laws:
• It is against Colorado law for any driver with a learner's permit, regardless of age, to use a cell phone while driving a vehicle.
• All drivers under 18 are prohibited from using a cell phone while driving.
• It is illegal in Colorado for any driver regardless of age to text while driving their vehicle.
Child Car Seats:
Rear Facing Seats
• It is mandatory that all infants who are less than one year old and weigh under 20 lbs must ride in a rear-facing car seat.
Forward Facing Seat
• Toddlers ranging in age between one and four years old and weigh between 20-40 lbs are required to be in a forward-facing seat while in a moving vehicle.
Booster Seats
• As of August 1, 2010, booster seats are required for all children 8 yrs old and younger.
