For people who suffer from acid reflux, there are some foods and beverages should be avoided, even if they take drugs to stop the problem. Many of the foods to avoid acid reflux include dairy products, breads, dairy products and spicy or fried foods. While many food products will help a person reduce the amount of acid in the stomach, avoiding those that are added to the problem must be a priority.
No matter how good fried fatty meat can taste, a person subject to acid reflux would be better to stay away from them as excess fat and proteins can act as a residual acid-producing pumps in the stomach and cause the pumping maximum speed before the food into the stomach. If you have a loose lower esophageal sphincter allowing some of the stomach contents to escape into the esophagus, the irritation that causes much pain and discomfort.
The acid produced by the stomach is hydrochloric acid, similar to the acid used in car batteries and if it can eat through clothing and the outer skin, it will have little trouble burning the lining of the esophagus. Fruits that are acidic are the ones to avoid when you have acid reflux. Oranges, orange juice, lemons, lemonade, grapefruit and grapefruit juice, tomatoes and tomato products and cranberry juice will give you the most trouble when you suffer from acid reflux.
Vegetables
Not much on this group to avoid, but the ones to avoid are the most delicious.You should not eat mashed potatoes, potato chips or raw onion. You can try eating some cooked onion and monitor their reaction to acid reflux.
Meat
Although you wouldn't think there is meat to avoid when you have acid reflux, there is. You should avoid ground beef from the chuck. This doesn't mean you have to give up the burgers, just don't use this cut of meat from them. Avoid steak, chicken nuggets and buffalo wings. The sauce in the wings will be tortured for days if you have acid reflux.
Dairy products and grains
Avoid ice cream can be hard for some, but if you have just a bit on occasion you may be able to handle it. If ice cream is a must for you, then experiment with how much you can take before symptoms of acid reflux set in. You should also avoid sour cream and regular cottage cheese. Macaroni and cheese should be avoided as well.
Beverages
Many people will be upset to know that wine and liquor as well as coffee and tea should not be consumed by those with acid reflux. When it comes to coffee and tea, it doesn't matter if it is regular or decaf, they should be completely avoided.
Avoiding these foods or consuming them in small amounts can go a long ways in helping you manage your acid reflux and painful symptoms that go along with it.
