Calcium is an essential mineral that is required by the child’s body to develop stronger bones. Calcium is naturally present in the bones.
However, to multiply the amounts and to make sure the bones grow and develop well it is important to provide ample amount of calcium to the body. Kids, till the age of 3, take the required amount of calcium mainly by milk. But, as they grow up, their requirements increase and milk alone is unable to fulfill them. Therefore, it becomes highly important to feed the child with calcium rich diets. Not only is calcium required to make the bones stronger, it is also required to prevent the occurrence of osteoporosis in adults.
Calcium Requirements for Kids:
Children from 9 – 18 Years of Age: Children between the ages of 9 years and 18 years have a high calcium requirement. They need at least 1300 mg of calcium every day. 1300 mg of calcium is equal to 4 glasses of milk every day. Of course, drinking four glasses is not possible so you must make sure your kid is consuming other forms of calcium too.
Children from 4 – 8 Years of Age: Children between the ages of 4 years and 8 years require around 800 mg of calcium every day which makes up to 3 glasses of milk every day.
Children from 1 – 3 Years of Age: Children between the ages of 1 year to 3 years (toddlers) require around 500 mg of calcium every day which makes up to 2 glasses of milk every day.
Milk is the primary source of calcium. There is a lot of calcium in milk. Thus, children who regularly drink milk fulfill their calcium requirements easily. However, children who are allergic to milk or who don’t drink it regularly can have weak bones and other similar health issues. For such children, it is a challenge to meet their calcium requirements.
One of the best ways to cover up the calcium intake of your child is to start giving him calcium supplements. Most calcium supplements are designed for children above the ages of 3. You shouldn’t use these supplements for toddlers unless your doctor tells you to. Make sure your child is having enough foods that have calcium in them are good for such children.
Remember, calcium deficiency can result in severe conditions so you must not take it lightly. If you think your child does not drink enough milk you must immediately consult a doctor.
