Have you ever considered a career in the field dentistry? There are many career opportunities within oral health dentistry. One could choose to become a dental assistant, a dental hygienist or dental technician.
A dentist is responsible for the oral care of their patient. From teeth to gums and everything in between, dentists must be able to fight off potential oral diseases caused from poor mouth health. Possibly you are cut out for the rigorous schooling involved to become a practicing dentist or even to pursue a specialized field of dentistry. Pearland orthodontics offers the following tips on how one could pursue an exciting and beneficial career within dentistry.
Becoming a dentist is no easy road; it takes a lot of time, schooling and plenty of studying. To become a dentist, students must start in high school. They should take extra science and health classes including biology and anatomy. Guidance counselors should be able to direct those interested toward colleges with two year pre-dental programs.
Those pursuing pre-dental studies generally graduate with a Bachelor’s degree prior to contacting the American Dental Association. The ADA will detail institutions of higher learning that have been chosen by the Commission on Dental Accreditation.
After completing all admission requirements, students can then take the Dental Admissions Test. This score, combined with all high school, college and specific science course grade point average will be cumulated to determine acceptance. Once in dental school, the first two years are completely dedicated to classroom and lab courses.
There are no clinical hands on training until the last two years where students spend time in clinics. Here they will be under the supervision of licensed dentists who will watch over all preparation and execution of dental work. Following the completion of dental school, students must pass a final written exam and can then become a dentist by obtaining a license.
Once they become a qualified dentist they may choose to further their studies in a specialized field of dentistry. Opening a clinic to practice orthodontists in Pearland would be an example of specialized dentistry.
A dental hygienist must also go through the same steps as a dentist, though their area of study is within a more centralized field of study. They also have the option to attend a trade school, whereas a dentist must receive their doctorate.
