This article explains a patients experience through chiropractic treatment.
The body is not a series of independent systems, but rather a complex machine where everything works in unison. When one system is out of whack it can begin a domino effect throughout the body. Fortunately, chiropractors know how the back connects to the rest of the body. They understand the ripple effect that occurs when compressed discs put excessive pressure on the spine and nerves. This knowledge and their ability to treat the entire body makes them more than simple doctors of the spine, it makes them chiropractic physicians.
I didn’t fully understand or appreciate this simple fact until after I was injured on the job. I work in a group home with adults who are profoundly mentally retarded and physically disabled. Most of them aren’t mobile, they have wheelchairs. Part of my job is lifting them into and out of their adaptive chairs, along with another staff member. We were lifting a client one day when she flung her head back, striking me in the chest and knocking me off balance. As I fell my concern wasn’t for breaking my own fall, but it was for making sure that she did not get injured. Fortunately, the client was not harmed. But I was.
The pain in my knee from where I folded under the client was intense and my leg had sharp, stabbing pains from the fall. I started out waiting for my body to heal. Pain killers were my best friend. Tylenol, Advil and Aleve were my constant companions. Most of the pain gradually went away, but the tenderness in my back persisted and my knee could start hurting at a moment’s notice.
I started with Dr. Baker at PrimeSpine to help with the back pain. Imagine my surprise when he was also able to treat my knee injury! Not only did he work his magic on my back, I felt healthier than I had in years. Best of all was his bedside manner. He was friendly and sweet, and I always left his office feeling better than I did when I went in.
