Traveller’s diarrhoea or also known as bali belly, delhi belly, Montezuma’s revenge, Tourist trot and Aden gut is a condition marked by frequent loose or unformed bowel movements accompanied by abdominal cramps, bloating, urgency to go to toilet, nausea, vomiting, and mild fever. This is regarded as the most common inconvenience attacking travelers from developed industrialized countries going to spend few days or weeks in developing countries. Through ingestion or consumption of contaminated food or water, the TD causing microorganisms are then transmitted inside the human’s body, or also called as faecal to oral route.

There are wide ranges that can cause traveller’s diarrhoea, from bacterial infection, which is responsible for 80-85% of all cases; viral infection, which is records 10-15% of TD cases; and parasites with 2-10% record. But the number one cause of this illness, with highest rate of recorded cases is due to special type of bacterium called E. coli (Escherichia coli) with strains of Enterotoxigenic (ETEC) or E. coli ETEC. 40 to 75% of all travellers’ diarrhoea cases are generally caused by ecoli infection.

E. coli ETEC as the leading cause of traveller’s diarrhoea is acquired through consumption of food, water or ice contaminated by this bacterium. Primarily, E. coli are mostly found in undercooked beef and unpasteurized milk, but there are also other sources of these bacteria such as tap and untreated water, raw or undercooked meats and seafood, raw fruits and vegetables, unpasteurized milk and other dairy products, and those food and drinks prepared in generally unhygienic conditions. Once E. coli ETEC bacteria are ingested to the body, they produce toxins that stimulate the lining of the intestines to secrete excessive fluid, thereby causing the symptoms.

Once you are assaulted by bacterial infection that leads to traveller’s diarrhoea, taking antibiotics (ciprofloxacin in 500mg dosage) is a great way to treat the condition. However, there is a product that has been developed and currently launched in Australia that is good for ecoli infection, as it has been proven effective to reduce traveller’s diarrhoea causing bacteria, since they are the most common cause of this inconvenient condition. The product is called Travelan, which works by neutralizing E. coli ETEC and thereby decreasing the risk of its attacks.

Bear in mind that even though traveller’s diarrhoea is a self-limiting condition, it can even get worse than its usual symptoms, such as developing blood in stools and prolonged cases, that’s why shielding yourself from its destructing forces is best even before getting the worst of things. Getting equipped with knowledge such as this ecoli infection or E. coli ETEC infection is a powerful tool to brief yourself from things you must avoid and things that you must practice. When health is at stake, disregard should never be in your vocabulary—what more if productivity and enjoyment will also be in jeopardy? E. coli and other infections, NO way.

Many people who tried Travelan have experienced a diarrhoea free trip and noticed a significantly less cramps and symptoms. If you want to know how it can help to lessen the occurrence of traveller's diarrhoea check out Travelan on travelan.com.au.
