Most bed and breakfasts in Italy will be in close proximity to some of the most amazing and awe inspiring buildings from the Roman Empire and they stand as huge tourist attractions. The Pantheon is one of the last great buildings constructed during the Roman Empire. Standing in a city full of ruins and remnants of the great empire this building is unyielding to the storms of time. This amazing architecture has been influential to other European and American architects. The ceiling interior is said to represent the heavens and the large holes above are apparently the eyes of god.
The Vatican Museum holds all the information about the religious centre for Catholics everywhere. Enormous collections of art dating from Egyptian pieces to Etruscan ruins to Renaissance paintings are available for viewing. Greek sculptures and Egyptian mummies are also held in this museum making it one of the greatest collections in the world.
The Roman Circus Maximus held the largest sporting events in Western Civilization. The many attractions included religious ceremonies and a variety of sports events but the biggest events were the madly popular chariot races. Little is left of the great Circus Maximus apart from the shells of the marble seats, palatial boxes and a forlorn dirt track. But if you want to get a feel for the entertainment enjoyed during the height of the Roman Empire then visit this great edifice.
The famous Roman Amphitheatre the Colosseum is one location you should visit if you are staying in a bed and breakfast in Italy. It is the embodiment of both the splendour and cruelty of the Roman Empire. It had the capability of holding 50,000 spectators and it hosted gladiator exhibitions, animal fights, the execution of prisoners and naval battles.
The Sistine Chapel is one of the most renowned and beautifully decorated churches in the world. It holds the masterpiece of Renaissance art, the Cappella Sistina in the Pope’s official residence the Apostolic Palace. This chapel has experienced many years of Papal Conclaves, Masses and tours.
St. Peter’s Basilica is an amazing building that can hold up to 60,000 people. It is beautifully constructed and shows the hand of the famous Michelangelo everywhere. His marble sculpture Pieta is also held in the building. It is the largest church in Christianity and it stands over Vatican City like the hand of God.
The Baths of Diocletian were once the largest baths in ancient Rome. Little of the original structure still exists but it is an excellent place to visit if you want to understand the nature of public bathing in ancient Rome.
The Trevi Fountain in Rome stands in a small square in the middle of the city. This elaborate construction was inspired by sea mythology and took 30 years to build. It is one of the most visited landmarks in the city.
The Roman Forum holds the lofty iconic columns that are so familiar to the architecture of the Roman Empire. They stand guard over the empty shells of buildings that represent the ancient ways of commerce, justice and worship. Hugely popular among tourists this amazing construction should not be missed if you’re staying in a bed and breakfast in Italy.
The Palatine Hill is another great place to visit. It holds the ruins of palaces and the residencies of the affluent during the Roman Empire. You will be able to visit and view the many temples and statuaries that honoured great Roman deities.
